Thoughts on Fantasy Football and Faith

Today I am going to delve into two topics that may not seem to have too much in common: fantasy football and one’s faith. See in my life, I have given time, thought, and perhaps even a bit of my passion to both. While this may seem understandably silly, I would agree wholeheartedly. Fantasy football should not be nearly as important to me as my faith in Jesus Christ. That seems obvious perhaps, right? If this is the case, why do I and so many men (and women) in the country devote so much time sometimes hours each week to fantasy football instead of something of eternal significance?

I have a confession. I am one of these people that spend terribly too much time updating my fantasy line-up. I see who the latest hot waiver wire pick-up is, who got injured this week, what the best match-ups are…well you get the picture. What sometimes seems like it will take a quick ten minutes can result in hours of time that could be used for something more fruitful. Now, I get this in principle. Yet I still spend loads of time on fantasy football.

Here is my challenge to you and to myself. Don’t spend so much time on fantasy football or perhaps something else that is a waste. It really doesn’t matter! Yes, it’s fun. It’s not a terribly bad thing to do. It’s great that fantasy sports can bring enjoyment to people. Believe me. I get that. But look at the big picture. We all have only so much time in this life. Look at how great people spend their time: Steve Jobs, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and on and on. They spent time innovating and trying to improve our world. They used their  God-given gifts for the greater good. Jesus Christ is the best example. Every minute of every day was spent intentionally by Jesus. He invested in people, prayed, and served others among many other extraordinary and important things. As a Christian, I am called to live a meaningful life and follow Jesus. For me, it means less fantasy football. That’s it. Plain and simple. What could it mean for you?
